Blepharoplasty

Today there is an increased demand to recapture and maintain an improved facial appearance. Blepharoplasty is performed on 100,000 men and women every year to improve the way they look. Droopy upper eyelids make you look older and can also impair vision. Lower eyelid puffiness and bags make one look worn and tired - Blepharoplasty can correct these problems.
[Before and after Blepharoplasty]
IS BLEPHAROPLASTY FOR  YOU?
Blepharoplasty removes the excess fat, muscle, and skin from both upper and lower lids. The results can be a refreshed appearance, with a younger firmer eye area. This procedure cannot alter dark circles, fine lines or wrinkles around the eyes, nor can it change sagging eyebrows. Consultation with  Dr. Younger can help you decided whether any additional complementary surgery  would enhance the final result. Dr. Younger might then recommend a simultaneous forehead lift to correct a drooping brow and smooth the forehead - Laser skin  resurfacing can also reduce the fine wrinkling in the lateral eye (crow's feet) and lower eyelid area.
MAKING THE DECISION FOR  BLEPHAROPLASTY
Whether the surgery is desired for functional or cosmetic reasons, your choice of a qualified facial plastic surgeon is of  paramount importance. The patient must also make the commitment to follow the  pre and post-operative instructions of Dr. Younger which will be explained in detail. During your initial consultation, you will be examined and questioned  about vision, tear production, use of lenses, and your desires for surgery. Dr. Younger will explain what you can expect from this surgery and take a complete medical history. Factors to be weighed include age, skin type, ethnic  background, and degree of vision obstruction. Furthermore, you can expect an open and honest exchange between you and the surgeon, which will establish the basis for a successful outcome.
After a mutual decision has been reached, the technique indicated for your individual surgery will be discussed. The type of anesthesia, the surgical facility, any supportive surgery, and the risks and costs of the procedure will  be outlined.
UNDERSTANDING THE SURGERY
In upper eyelid surgery, Dr. Younger first marks the individual lines and creases of the lids in order to keep the scars as invisible as possible along these  natural folds. The incision is made, and excess fat, muscle, and loose skin are removed. Fine, self-dissolving sutures are used to close the incision, and in cases where and upper eyelid crease is being created or repositioned (Asian eyelids), sutures may be left in longer to enhance the result.
In lower eyelid surgery, Dr. Younger makes the incision in an inconspicuous  site long the lashline and smile creases of the lower lid. Excess fat, muscle  and skin are then trimmed away before the incision is closed with find sutures. Eyelid puffiness caused primarily by excess fat may be corrected by a  transconjunctival Blepharoplasty. The incision is made inside the lower eyelid, and excess fatty material is removed, followed by closure with self dissolving sutures - resulting in no visible scar. Under normal conditions, Blepharoplasty can take from one to two hours on an outpatient basis.
AFTER-EFFECTS OF SURGERY
Immediately after surgery has been completed, an ointment  to prevent dryness of the eye area is applied and used constantly during the post-operative period. A certain degree of swelling and bruising is normal. Cold compresses, as well as head elevation when lying down, will enhance healing and  relieve discomfort.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The B.C. Medical Services plan does not cover surgery that is done purely for cosmetic  reasons. Dr. Younger and his staff will discuss costs before the operation.  Payment for cosmetic surgery is required 2 weeks prior to surgery. If the purpose of surgery is to correct functional impairment, we would consult with the Medical Plan prior to arranging your operation.
