Liposuction

For generations, people have been using various techniques, including diet and exercise, to improve their physical appearance. Several years ago a new  procedure "liposuction surgery" was perfected in Europe.
[Before and after Liposuction]  [Pre- and postoperative instructions for liposuction]
WHAT IS LIPOSUCTION SURGERY?
Liposuction is a surgical procedure in which fat cells are removed from the body. A small tube, attached to a high pressure vacuum suction,  inserted through the skin, extracts excess fat cells from areas where unsightly fat deposits have accumulated. Immediately following the surgery, a compression garment is applied to the site to support the affected area. The garment is worn for one to four weeks depending upon the extent of the surgery and the individual's healing process.
WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED?
While  the procedure is not designed to correct general obesity, there are areas where excess fat can be treated. Areas of the body which respond well to liposuction include the abdomen, thighs, chin, neck and jowls.
WHO ARE THE BEST CANDIDATES?
Men  and women who are in good physical condition with good skin elasticity are the  best candidates for liposuction. When the procedure was first introduced, only younger people were considered to be good candidates however, recent improvements in the technique have made it possible to treat patients of all ages. Each person seeking this treatment, regardless of age, must be personally  asessed by Dr. Younger to determine if he or she is suitable for liposuction  surgery.
WHAT RESULTS CAN BE EXPECTED?
Because liposuction surgery does not involve large incisions and extensive cutting, there is little pain, rapid healing and minimal scarring.  Most patients are completely ambulatory immediately after surgery and are able  to return to normal activities within a week although vigorous physical activity is discouraged for several weeks. The cosmetic results may not be immediately apparent because, as with most surgery, some swelling or puffiness usually occurs. It takes several months before the final results are evident. It is  important to remember that liposuction surgery is not a cure for generalized  obesity. It is, however, an excellent procedure that will benefit those who want to remove unsightly fat from localized areas that have been resistant to other  techniques.
WHERE IS THE SURGERY PERFORMED?
Facial and Neck liposuction can be performed in our surgery  centre, an ambulatory surgical care centre or a hospital. Body liposuction is generally performed in a hospital, on an out-patient or in-patient basis.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS?
Each year  thousands of liposuction surgeries are successfully performed. Although complications are rare, possible risks will be discussed with Dr. Younger prior  to the surgery. If you are interested in learning more about liposuction  surgery, please call our office for an appointment and the doctor will be happy  to answer all your questions.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Fees for cosmetic surgery and operative facilities vary widely and depend on the extent and complexity of the surgery, as well as on the individual surgeon. Dr. Younger and his staff will discuss costs before the procedure. Fees for cosmetic surgery  are paid in advance as this type of surgery is not covered by the B.C. Medical  Services Plan.
